RTIC 72 Quart Ultra-Light Wheeled Cooler Review: Big Capacity Without the Back Pain

Key Features
Up to 10 Days Ice Retention
3 inches of closed-cell foam insulation on all sides. In real-world camping conditions, expect 4-5 days of solid ice.
30% Lighter Construction
Weighs around 31 lbs empty versus 40+ for standard rotomolded coolers this size. You’ll feel the difference loading the truck.
All-Terrain Wheels
Wide rubber wheels roll over gravel, sand, and grass. Telescoping handle locks at two heights.
72 Quart Capacity
Fits roughly 96 cans with ice. Big enough for a weekend with the family or a full day tailgate.
Our Experience
Rotomolded coolers keep ice forever, but they’re heavy even when empty. The RTIC 72 QT Ultra-Light tries to split the difference, keep most of the insulation, shed the weight, and add wheels so you’re not throwing out your back hauling it to the campsite.
We loaded it with ice and drinks on a Friday afternoon and drove to a campground. By Sunday evening, there was still slush at the bottom. Not the 10-day claim on the box, but we were opening it constantly. For a weekend trip with normal cooler traffic, it’s more than enough.
The wheels are the standout feature. They’re wide enough to handle gravel paths without sinking, and the telescoping handle feels sturdy, no wobble or flex. Loading it into a truck bed is noticeably easier than heaving a YETI Tundra 65.
One thing: the latches take some force to pop open. Not a flaw exactly, just something to know. They seal tight, which is the point.
Pros & Cons
What We Liked
- Genuinely lighter than competing rotomolded coolers
- All-terrain wheels handle gravel and grass well
- 4-5 days of realistic ice retention with frequent opening
- 72 QT fits a full weekend’s worth of food and drinks
Worth Knowing
- $329 is still a big cooler investment
- Latches require firm pressure to open and close
- Too large for solo day trips, consider the 45 QT for that
Final Verdict
The RTIC 72 QT Ultra-Light does exactly what it promises, premium cooler performance with less weight and better portability. If you camp, tailgate, or fish regularly and you’re tired of wrestling a 45-lb cooler, this is worth the upgrade. The wheels and weight savings aren’t gimmicks, they make a real difference when you’re hauling gear.
