What An Air Fryer Is Good At, And What It Is Not

Its a small convection oven with a fan that runs hard. Nothing more mystical than that. Which means it excels at anything you want crisp on the outside and cooked through fast. Frozen fries, chicken wings, halloumi, roast potatoes, reheating pizza so the base is not soggy.

It is poor at anything wet or battered. Wet batter drips through the basket and burns on the element. Large roasts do not brown evenly because the airflow cannot get all the way round. And it will not do a real deep fry texture, so calibrate expectations, because the 85 percent less oil claim is true and so is the fact that it tastes like 85 percent less oil.

The Gen 2 Changes

Quieter than the previous model, noticeably. The old one had a fan whine that people complained about constantly and this one sits closer to a microwave in volume.

Preheat is faster and there is a shake reminder, which sounds like a gimmick and then turns out to be the thing that stops you forgetting and producing half burnt fries. The basket is dishwasher safe with a non stick coating that will last longer if you hand wash it and never use metal in there.

Counter Space Is The Real Cost

Its bulky and it needs clearance behind it for the exhaust, so shoving it against a wall is not an option. If your counter is already crowded, be realistic about whether this ends up in a cupboard after a month, because thats the fate of most of them.
