JBL sells these two little speakers side by side and the store page does almost nothing to explain the $20 gap between them. - 7 watts is a real jump. Owners describe it filling a campsite or bathroom where the Go 4 gets drowned out by running water
- The carabiner is the feature people end up using daily, no strap or clip to lose
- 12 hour rated battery covers a full beach day with room to spare

- Too big for a pants pocket, it hangs off things instead
- No speakerphone mic, so calls still go through your phone

- Bass is thin. Physics wins, the driver is tiny
Where the $20 Actually Goes
Bigger driver, bigger battery, and the carabiner. Thats the whole list. Sound signature is close between them since both run JBL’s app with EQ, but the Clip 5 has headroom the Go 4 cant fake. At half volume they sound similar. Outdoors at full volume they do not.
One thing owners of both flag: neither has an aux jack. Bluetooth or nothing. If you were hoping to plug in an old MP3 player for the garage, look elsewhere. And if your budget stretches past this pair, the rest of our Tech & Gadgets section has bigger options.
The Bottom Line
Get the Clip 5 if the speaker will leave the house. The louder output and 12 hour battery earn the extra $20 the first time you take it camping or clip it to a bike bag. Get the Go 4 if it mostly plays podcasts on the kitchen counter or in the shower caddy, where its size is the point and the volume ceiling never comes up.
