7 Smart Home Myths That Are Costing You Money

Smart home marketing has gotten really good at making things sound essential when they’re really not. Here are the seven myths we run into the most, and what’s actually true.

1. “You need a hub for everything”

You don’t. A lot of modern smart devices work directly with WiFi and your phone. The hub is helpful when you’re running 20+ devices or want them to talk to each other locally. For your first 5 to 10 devices, a hub is overkill. Save the $50 to $100.

2. “Smart bulbs save a ton of money”

They save some, but not the way the box claims. The “saved electricity” calculations on the side of a Philips Hue box assume you replace incandescent bulbs. Most homes already use LEDs. Real savings from smart bulbs come from automation (lights off when nobody’s home), not the bulb itself.

3. “More expensive is more secure”

Not always. Some of the most secure smart home gear comes from open-source platforms running on a $35 Raspberry Pi. Some of the most insecure come from $400 brand-name devices that haven’t gotten a firmware update in two years. Check the security update history before you buy.

4. “Smart locks are safer than regular locks”

Mixed. A good smart lock is at least as secure as a deadbolt. A bad one can be defeated by the right Bluetooth attack from across the street. The trick is picking a lock with proper certification (BHMA Grade 1 or 2 at minimum) and a manufacturer with a security track record.

5. “WiFi cameras = home security”

Cameras record, they don’t prevent. A camera shows you who broke in, not how to keep them out. If you want real security, the spend should be: lock + lights + alarm > cameras. Cameras are the cherry on top, not the foundation.

6. “Voice assistants listen to everything”

They listen for the wake word constantly, which is technically true. But they don’t transmit until they hear it. The privacy concerns are real but more nuanced. If it bothers you, mute the microphones with the physical switch when you’re not using them. All of the major brands have one.

7. “Smart home will save you time”

Sometimes. Realistically, the time saved by a routine that turns off the lights when you leave is about 4 seconds per day. The time spent troubleshooting when an automation breaks can be hours. Smart home is more about convenience and feel than serious time savings. Be honest with yourself about why you want it.

So what’s actually worth it?

The simple stuff. A doorbell that lets you see who’s at the door. Lights that turn on automatically at sunset. A thermostat that’s smarter than your old one. The basics deliver real value. The exotic stuff is mostly novelty.
