Most “best of” lists for desk gear are written by people who don’t actually sit at one all day. The picks below are the ones we keep around because they earn back the desk space, not because they look cool in a YouTube setup tour. Each one is under fifty bucks. A few are under twenty.

If your laptop has two USB-C ports and nothing else, this is the cheapest way to fix that. Two USB-A, two USB-C, HDMI, ethernet, SD and microSD, all in something the size of a deck of cards. The 4K/60 HDMI is the part that matters, most cheap hubs cap at 4K/30 which looks awful.
List price is $79 but it dips under $50 every couple months. The MagSpeed scroll wheel that switches between ratchet and free spin is the feature that makes you forget every other mouse you’ve owned. Pairs with three devices and switches with a button on the bottom.
Sits on top of your monitor, lights your desk without bouncing glare back at the screen. The Lite version skips the wireless puck of the original Halo and saves you about $80. Auto brightness reads the room and adjusts. We’ve put one on every monitor in the office.
Your desk gets quieter the second this lands on it. The wool felt absorbs the click and clack, the cork backing keeps it from sliding. Comes in seven colors. Larger sizes go over $50, but the medium hits right at $45 and is the right size for a single monitor.
Folds flat to the size of a thin pencil case. Pops up tall enough to put your laptop screen at eye level. We’ve used the same Roost for four years, the carbon fiber legs don’t sag like every cheaper one we’ve tried. Pricey for what looks like three sticks but worth it.
Boring but transformative. Your six dangling cables become one tidy snake. Kit includes the neoprene sleeve, fifty velcro reusable ties, and adhesive clips for routing along the underside of your desk. It’s $18. There’s no good reason not to.
A small thing, but a real one. Coffee, water glass, the random cup of tea you forgot about, all of it sits on something nicer than a soggy paper towel. Full grain leather darkens and cracks the way leather is supposed to. Set of four for $25.
