The first thing to know about whether the Apple AirTag is worth it: it really, really matters whether you have an iPhone. Theres no nuance there. AirTag is brilliant on iOS. It is functionally useless on Android. So thats your gate. If you’re on Android, the rest of this review doesnt apply to you, get a Tile or a Chipolo.

For iPhone users, here’s the honest take after using a couple of these for over a year on luggage, keys, and a backpack.

Setup is the easiest of any tracker

Pull the plastic tab out of the AirTag. Hold it next to your iPhone. A setup card slides up. Done. The whole thing takes about 10 seconds. No app to download, no account to create, no Bluetooth pairing menu. Tile and Chipolo both still require an app login. Apple skipped that whole step and it shows.

The Find My network is the real product

This is the thing competitors cant match. Every iPhone, iPad, and Mac in the wild quietly listens for AirTag pings and reports them to Apple. So when you lose an AirTag, you’re not relying on YOUR phone being nearby, you’re relying on every other Apple device passing within Bluetooth range to do the work. With nearly a billion of them out there, the coverage is absurd. I’ve seen AirTags ping a location on the other side of a city within 20 minutes of going missing.

Precision Finding is genuinely useful

If you have an iPhone 11 or newer, the U1 chip lets you do Precision Finding. Walk around with the phone and it’ll show an arrow and distance, like 8 feet, 5 feet, 2 feet, until you’re standing on top of the AirTag. This works incredibly well in the same room. It’s overkill 90% of the time but the one time you actually need it, it earns its keep.

The annoying parts

AirTag has a couple of real limitations that most reviews skip past.

First, theres no built-in keyring hole. You need a case or holder, and Apple’s official one is $35 (yes, really). Third party cases are fine and cost $5 to $10 on Amazon. But it’s annoying that a $25 tracker requires a $5 accessory just to attach to anything.

Second, AirTags chirp loudly when they’ve been with someone who isn’t you for a while. This is great for anti-stalking. It’s also occasionally annoying if you’re traveling with a borrowed bag or letting a friend hold your luggage, the AirTag will start screaming about an unknown tag.

Third, the battery is replaceable but Apple changed the design in 2022 to require pressing harder to compress the spring. Some users have reported the new battery covers don’t always click back in cleanly. Mine have been fine but it’s a known issue.

Get an AirTag if: You’re on iPhone, you frequently misplace keys/wallet/luggage, and you’re willing to spend $5-10 on a case to actually attach it. The 4-pack at $99 is the move, individual ones at $29 each don’t make the math work as well.

Skip it if: You’re on Android (Tile or Chipolo work cross-platform), or you only need to track one thing and budget matters more than ecosystem perks.
