Anyone starting a smart home, or adding a room to one they already have. Also a decent kitchen timer and a very good bedroom alarm, which is what most Dots actually end up being used for once the novelty of asking it things wears off.

What Changed In The 5th Gen
Better bass than the 4th gen, noticeably. Still a small speaker in a sphere, so it will not fill a living room or handle music you actually care about, but for a kitchen or a bedside its gone from thin to acceptable.
Theres a temperature sensor built in now, which sounds like filler until you use it to trigger a fan or a heater through a routine. Motion detection too, via ultrasound, so a Dot can turn a light on when you walk in without a separate sensor. Both are genuinely handy and both are easy to miss because Amazon barely mentions them.
The eero built in extends a mesh network if you already run eero. If you dont, it does nothing.
The Privacy Question
It is a microphone in your house owned by a company that sells you things. The mute button is a hardware disconnect rather than a software toggle, which is the right design, and you can set recordings to auto delete or not be saved at all. Whether that is enough reassurance is a personal call and worth making deliberately rather than by default.
Where It Falls Down
No 3.5mm output on this generation. If you wanted to run it into a proper speaker you are out of luck and need the older model or a different device entirely. That removal annoyed a lot of people and rightly so.
Alexa also keeps trying to sell you things mid answer. You can turn most of that off buried in settings, and you should.

Final Verdict
The Echo Dot is basically the gateway drug of smart home tech. It handles music, timers, smart home controls, and random trivia questions well enough that you’ll end up putting one in every room. Sound isnt audiophile quality but for a $50 smart speaker its perfectly fine for most people.
