Smart home tech has gone from “nice to have” to “why didn’t I do this sooner” territory. But with hundreds of gadgets fighting for your attention (and your wallet), picking the right ones isn’t obvious. I’ve tested smart speakers, locks, doorbells, lighting, curtain motors, and hubs over the past year. Some were great. Some went straight back in the box.

This page is your starting point. I’ve organized every smart home product we’ve reviewed into categories so you can find exactly what fits your setup, whether you’re building from scratch or adding one more piece to the puzzle.

Smart Speakers & Voice Assistants

A smart speaker is usually the first thing people buy, and honestly, it’s still the best entry point. Voice control for lights, music, timers, and quick answers, all without pulling out your phone.

Smart Security: Locks & Doorbells

Smart locks and doorbells do two things really well: they let you ditch physical keys and they show you who’s at the door when you’re not home. The catch is some of them look terrible or require you to rewire things. The ones below don’t.

Smart Home Hubs & Automation

Once you’ve got a few smart devices, a hub ties them together. Instead of opening five different apps, one hub controls everything, and lets you set up automations like “turn off all lights at midnight” with a single tap.

Smart Lighting

Good smart lighting does more than turn on and off by voice. It sets the mood, syncs with your screen, and runs on schedules so you never walk into a dark house again.

Smart Wearables & Companions

How to Start Your Smart Home (Without Wasting Money)

Here’s the order I’d recommend if you’re starting from zero:

Step 1: Pick your voice assistant. Alexa (Echo Dot) or Google Assistant (Nest Mini). This becomes your control center. Most smart devices work with both, but Alexa has more compatible products right now.

Step 2: Add one “quality of life” device. A smart lock, a video doorbell, or smart light bars. Something you’ll use every single day. Don’t buy five things at once, you’ll get overwhelmed setting them up.

Step 3: Get a hub when you hit 3+ devices. The SwitchBot Hub 2 is a solid pick because it works with IR remotes too, so your old TV and AC unit become “smart” without replacing them.

Step 4: Automate. Set up routines, lights that turn on at sunset, doors that lock at 11 PM, curtains that open at 7 AM. This is where smart home tech actually saves you time instead of just being a novelty.
